Using a combination of Solvay SOLVAir® pre-ground sodium bicarbonate and activated carbon or lignite coke, highly efficient flue gas purification can be achieved from aluminum smelters. Sodium bicarbonate effectively reacts with the acids in the flue gas, neutralizing them and converting them into inert salts, while activated carbon or lignite coke can adsorb heavy metals and other harmful pollutants. The process requires precise injection of these additives through two calibrated dosers, ensuring maximum contaminant removal efficiency and compliance with environmental regulations.

Aluminum recovery foundries emit pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals such as Copper, Magnesium, Silicon, Zinc, and Manganese, which must be controlled to minimize harmful effects on the environment and human health.
During the melting and recovery of aluminum, fumes contaminated with sulfur oxides (SOx), acids (HCl and HF), and heavy metals (such as Copper, Magnesium, Silicon, Zinc, and Manganese) are emitted. Premixed sodium bicarbonate neutralizes these acids, converting them into less harmful solid salts, while activated carbon or lignite coke captures the heavy metals, offering a significant reduction in harmful emissions.
Sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate reduce the acidity of the fumes transforming them into inert compounds such as sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium fluoride (NaF), thus reducing the environmental impact of the emissions. Activated carbon and lignite coke, thanks to their adsorption capacity, effectively remove heavy metals and other hazardous compounds from the fumes.
While both activated carbon and lignite coke are employed in flue gas purification, their properties differ slightly. Activated carbon, with its advanced porous structure, is particularly effective in adsorbing a wide range of pollutants. Lignite coke, on the other hand, is better suited to specific needs, such as low-temperature treatment, providing a cost-effective solution where applicable.
Sodium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate are both used to neutralize acids in the fumes, but they operate differently. Sodium Carbonate, being more alkaline, efficiently neutralizes a broad range of acids, while Sodium Bicarbonate decomposes into CO2, water, and active Sodium Carbonate, increasing efficiency due to its greater contact area with the acids, particularly under reduced temperature conditions.
