Pre-ground SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate for Biomass Waste to Energy Incineration Plants

Biomass waste-to-energy represents a promising and environmentally sustainable solution in the field of energy conversion, transforming organic material into electricity and heat. However, the process is not without its challenges, as it involves the emission of pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and other potentially harmful air pollutants.

Solution with Pre Ground SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate

An innovative solution for treating flue gases generated during biomass incineration is based on the use of Solvay SOLVAir® pre-ground sodium bicarbonate. This approach involves directly dosing the pre-ground substance into the exhaust gas streams to neutralize acidic pollutants. The material reacts chemically with the acidic compounds, forming solid salts that can be easily filtered and separated from the gas stream using particle abatement systems. The choice of sodium bicarbonate ensures high efficiency in reducing sulfur oxides, hydrochloric acid, and hydrofluoric acid, making the flue gas treatment process simpler and less impactful in terms of operating costs.

Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

For specific types of biomass to be disposed of, flue gas treatment can be supplemented with a secondary filtration system using activated carbon or lignite coke. This complementary technology is particularly useful when the treated biomass releases specific pollutants, such as heavy metals, which require targeted solutions for their neutralization. Activated carbon and lignite coke, thanks to their high porous surface area and adsorption capacity, are able to retain contaminants such as mercury and other metals, preventing their release into the environment and helping to comply with the most stringent environmental standards.

Flue Gas Cleaning with Pre-ground Solvay SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate and Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

FAQ

During the biomass waste-to-energy process, premixed sodium bicarbonate is primarily aimed at neutralizing sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and hydrofluoric acid (HF). Activated carbon/lignite coke, on the other hand, deals with the adsorption of heavy metals such as mercury, offering an integrated solution for controlling a wide range of pollutants. Both methods improve the efficiency of flue gas treatment and reduce the overall environmental impact.
The use of premixed sodium bicarbonate in flue gas treatment is a practical and effective solution for neutralizing acidic pollutants such as SOx, HCl, and HF. This method ensures a significant reduction in harmful emissions, improving air quality and increasing the environmental sustainability of energy produced from biomass.
Activated carbon and lignite coke play a fundamental role in addressing the presence of specific contaminants, such as heavy metals, in combustion gases from biomass. Their ability to adsorb these pollutants allows for effective removal, ensuring comprehensive flue gas treatment that meets sustainability and environmental safety requirements.
Activated carbon and lignite coke both serve the purpose of flue gas cleaning, but they have considerable differences in functionality and use. Activated carbon, with its high adsorption capacity due to porosity and extensive surface area, is effective in capturing a variety of gases and organic vapors. On the contrary, lignite coke is less versatile and more suitable at low temperatures, up to 200°C, where it can effectively treat specific contaminants. Considering its lower cost, lignite coke is preferred in industrial settings with controlled temperatures.
Both Sodium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate are used to neutralize acids in exhaust fumes, but they are distinguished by their approach. Sodium Carbonate boasts higher alkalinity, offering greater effectiveness against a variety of acids. On the contrary, Sodium Bicarbonate interacts with acids to dissociate into CO2, water, and an active Sodium Carbonate that has a more porous structure, ensuring improved effectiveness due to a larger contact area, particularly effective at reduced temperatures.
