The combustion of biomass produces several polluting compounds that require careful management. Among the main pollutants are SOx derived from the sulfur content present in some biomass types, HCl and HF acids, which can be generated from the chemical decomposition of traces of contaminating materials, and heavy metals like lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg), often present as impurities in residues from industrial or agricultural biomass. Managing these substances is a priority to ensure environmental safety and compliance with European emissions regulations.
Sorbalite leverages its unique composition to tackle a broad spectrum of pollutants. The hydrated lime reacts with the acids present in the gases produced by biomass combustion, transforming them into harmless solid salts that can be easily removed. At the same time, the activated carbon enhanced in Sorbalite absorbs and immobilizes harmful substances, such as heavy metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are difficult to eliminate with standard methods.
The flue gas purification process with Sorbalite occurs through an integrated dosing system directly in the flue gas stream. The material is introduced by pneumatic injection, allowing the Sorbalite to make direct contact with the pollutants in the gases. In a single phase, the product neutralizes acids and adsorbs heavy metals, making the system quicker, more effective, and less costly from an operational standpoint.
