Technical Sodium Bicarbonate and Activated Carbon/Lignite Coke for Bronze Recycling Foundry

The process of recovering bronze from scrap metal and industrial waste presents significant environmental challenges, primarily due to the polluting emissions generated during smelting. These fumes contain harmful substances such as sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals. To mitigate the environmental impact, flue gas purification systems, which use specific additives such as sodium bicarbonate and activated carbon or lignite coke, are essential.

Solution with Technical Grade Sodium Bicarbonate plus Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

This type of plant features a two-station filtering system, which removes oxides, acids, and metals using a mill for grinding and dispensing the technical sodium bicarbonate and a doser for feeding activated carbon or lignite coke into the line.

While baking soda neutralizes the acids generated during the smelting process, activated carbon and lignite coke capture and eliminate heavy metals and other hazardous substances present in the flue gases.

FAQ

The bronze recovery process produces fumes containing Sulfur Oxides (SOx), Hydrochloric Acid (HCl), Hydrofluoric Acid (HF), and heavy metals such as Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), and Mercury (Hg). These pollutants arise from the composition of the metal scraps and the additives used in the melting process.
During the bronze melting process, scrap metals are heated to high temperatures, producing fumes that contain pollutants. The use of technical grade sodium bicarbonate and activated carbon/lignite coke effectively treats these fumes. Sodium bicarbonate neutralizes acids such as HCl and HF, while activated carbon/lignite coke absorbs heavy metals and other toxic substances, thus reducing the environmental impact of emissions.
Sodium bicarbonate chemically reacts with the acids present in fumes produced during the bronze melting process, converting them into non-hazardous solid salts, such as sodium chloride. This process significantly lowers the acidity of exhaust gases and helps make the emitted air safer for the environment.
Activated carbon and lignite coke are essential for removing mercury and other heavy metals present in the fumes from bronze melting. They can absorb a wide range of toxic compounds, not just metals, thanks to their high specific surface area.
Activated carbon stands out for its high efficiency in air purification, attributed to its superior adsorptive characteristics due to its porous structure and extensive surface area. It is particularly effective in filtering organic gases and vapors. In contrast, lignite coke has a more limited application, performing well in environments with temperatures below 200°C for the removal of specific pollutants. Its cost-effectiveness makes it a viable option for facilities operating within these thermal limits.
