Hydrated Lime or Sorbacal® and Active Carbon or Lignite Coke for Gas fired Power Plants

In the energy sector, gas-fired power plants are a key source of electricity generation. Although these plants are considered cleaner than others that use solid or liquid fuels, they still produce polluting emissions when burning fossil gas. The resulting flue gases contain harmful substances such as sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium, which can have a significant impact on the environment and human health. To ensure these emissions are kept within the limits permitted by current regulations, advanced flue gas purification systems must be implemented. A particularly efficient solution is the combined use of hydrated lime or Sorbacal® and activated carbon or lignite coke.

Solution with Hydrated Lime or Sorbacal® plus Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

Hydrated lime and Sorbacal® play a key role in flue gas treatment, neutralizing the acids present and converting them into harmless solid salts, while activated carbon and lignite coke, thanks to their high adsorption capacity, effectively remove heavy metals and other volatile organic compounds present in flue gases. Used together, these agents represent a comprehensive solution for the purification of harmful emissions.

The operating process involves the controlled injection of hydrated lime or Sorbacal® and activated carbon or lignite coke through two separate, calibrated dosers to ensure precise dosing of both materials. This approach achieves high pollutant removal efficiency.

Flue Gas Cleaning with Hydrated Lime or Sorbacal® and Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

FAQ

Although fossil gas emits fewer particles compared to other fuels, combustion flue gases contain substances such as sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals such as mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd). These pollutants must be properly treated to reduce their impact on the environment and human health.
During the combustion of fossil gas in power plants, flue gases containing pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), acids (HCl and HF), and heavy metals (e.g., mercury, lead, and cadmium) are emitted. Hydrated lime serves to neutralize the acids, while activated carbon/lignite coke is used to capture toxic metals and other harmful compounds. Thanks to the combination of these two materials, it is possible to effectively reduce emissions while complying with environmental standards.
Hydrated lime is a highly reactive alkaline compound that neutralizes acids present in combustion flue gases. When it comes into contact with hydrochloric acid (HCl) or hydrofluoric acid (HF), these are transformed into stable solid salts such as calcium chloride (CaCl₂) and calcium fluoride (CaF₂), significantly reducing acidity levels and minimizing the risk of negative environmental impacts.
Activated carbon and lignite coke are used as adsorbent materials for the removal of heavy metals, such as mercury, cadmium, and lead, as well as harmful organic compounds. The porous structure of activated carbon and lignite coke ensures a high adsorption surface area.
Activated carbon and lignite coke can both be used for flue gas purification, but they have different properties. Activated carbon, thanks to its highly porous structure, is better suited for removing a wide range of contaminants. Lignite coke, less effective with some contaminants, is more commonly used in scenarios involving low temperatures and is preferred for less expensive applications.
