Pre-ground SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate and Active Carbon or Lignite Coke for Gas fired Power Plants

In the energy sector, gas-fired power plants are a key source of electricity generation. Although these plants are considered cleaner than others that use solid or liquid fuels, they still produce polluting emissions when burning fossil gas. The resulting flue gases contain harmful substances such as sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium, which can have a significant impact on the environment and human health. To ensure these emissions are kept within the limits permitted by current regulations, advanced flue gas purification systems must be implemented. A particularly efficient solution is the combined use of Solvay SOLVAir® pre-ground sodium bicarbonate and activated carbon or lignite coke.

Solution with Pre Ground SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate plus Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

Solvay SOLVAir® pre-ground sodium bicarbonate plays a key role in flue gas treatment, chemically reacting with the acids present to neutralize them and transform them into solid salts, while activated carbon and lignite coke, thanks to their high adsorption capacity, effectively remove heavy metals and other harmful substances present in flue gases. The operating process involves the controlled injection of pre-ground sodium bicarbonate and activated carbon or lignite coke through two separate, calibrated dosers to ensure precise dosing of both materials. This approach achieves high efficiency in the pollutant removal process, while complying with environmental regulations.

Flue Gas Cleaning with Pre-ground Solvay SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate and Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

FAQ

Although fossil gas emits fewer particulates compared to other fuels, the combustion flue gases contain substances such as sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals like mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd). These pollutants must be adequately treated to mitigate their negative impacts on the environment and human health.
During the combustion of fossil gas in power plants, flue gases are generated containing pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), acids (HCl and HF), and heavy metals (e.g., mercury, lead, and cadmium). Premilled sodium bicarbonate chemically reacts with the acids, neutralizing them and reducing their harmfulness, while activated carbon/lignite coke is used to capture toxic metals and other harmful compounds. By combining these two materials, effective emission reduction is achieved while adhering to environmental standards.
Premilled sodium bicarbonate is an alkaline compound that chemically reacts with the acidic components in the flue gases. When it comes into contact with hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hydrofluoric acid (HF), it transforms into stable and harmless solid salts, such as sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium fluoride (NaF). This reaction neutralizes the acidity of the flue gases, reducing the environmental impact of harmful emissions.
Activated carbon and lignite coke are used as adsorbent materials for the removal of heavy metals, such as mercury, cadmium, and lead, along with hazardous organic compounds. Thanks to their porous structure, they provide a high surface area for adsorption, ensuring thorough purification of combustion flue gases.
Activated carbon and lignite coke can both be used in flue gas treatment, but there are differences between them. Activated carbon, due to its highly porous structure, is more effective at removing a wide range of contaminants. Lignite coke, while having a lower adsorption capacity in some cases, is better suited for applications requiring low-temperature operations and is often a more economical option in certain circumstances.
Both sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate are widely used for acid neutralization in industrial flue gases, but the two compounds operate via different mechanisms. Sodium carbonate, due to its higher alkalinity, effectively neutralizes various types of acids. Conversely, sodium bicarbonate decomposes under heat into CO2, water, and an active form of sodium carbonate characterized by greater porosity, which enhances its efficiency by increasing its surface area for reaction with acids, especially at lower temperatures.
