Hydrated Lime or Sorbacal® and Active Carbon or Lignite Coke for Oil fired Power Plants

Oil-fired thermal combustion plants are a popular solution for energy recovery through the combustion of used oils or residues from industrial processes. Although they guarantee significant efficiency in converting waste into energy, these processes generate fumes containing harmful substances that must be properly treated. During the combustion of used oils, pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals (e.g., mercury, lead, and cadmium) are formed, which can have serious impacts on the environment and public health. To ensure compliance with environmental regulations, the use of advanced purification systems is essential. A highly effective technology for reducing emissions is based on the combination of hydrated lime or Sorbacal® and activated carbon or lignite coke.

Solution with Hydrated Lime or Sorbacal® plus Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

Hydrated lime and Sorbacal® play a key role in neutralizing the acids present in the flue gases, transforming them into stable solid salts that can be easily collected and managed. At the same time, activated carbon and lignite coke are used to adsorb heavy metals and volatile organic compounds, completing the purification action and reducing the environmental impact of emissions. This synergistic combination allows for comprehensive treatment of pollutants emitted by oils during the combustion process.

The purification process involves the use of two separate dosers, each configured to manage the precise dosage of hydrated lime or Sorbacal® on one side and activated carbon or lignite coke on the other, ensuring effective and stable purification.

Flue Gas Cleaning with Hydrated Lime or Sorbacal® and Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

FAQ

The combustion of waste oils produces various toxic compounds, including sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals like mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd). These pollutants require specific treatment to ensure their complete removal before release into the atmosphere, thereby minimizing the environmental impact of the entire process.
During the combustion of waste oils, flue gases containing sulfur oxides (SOx), acids (HCl and HF), and heavy metals (such as mercury, lead, and cadmium) are generated. Hydrated lime works by neutralizing the acids present in the flue gases, while activated carbon/lignite coke adsorbs heavy metals and other toxic compounds, making the emissions safer for the environment. The use of both materials ensures compliance with current regulations regarding atmospheric emissions.
The primary function of hydrated lime is to neutralize the acids present in combustion flue gases. When hydrated lime comes into contact with hydrochloric acid (HCl) or hydrofluoric acid (HF), it facilitates the formation of harmless solid salts, such as calcium chloride (CaCl₂) and calcium fluoride (CaF₂), which can be easily removed. This process significantly reduces the acidity of the flue gases, thereby preventing environmental damage.
Activated carbon and lignite coke act as adsorbent filters, eliminating toxic compounds from flue gases. Due to their porous structure and high specific surface area, activated carbon and lignite coke are particularly effective at adsorbing heavy metals such as mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd), as well as certain volatile organic compounds.
Although the two materials share many characteristics, they have different applications. Activated carbon offers greater versatility and a broader adsorption capacity, making it ideal for treating complex contaminants. In contrast, lignite coke can be a viable alternative for plants operating at lower temperatures and requiring a more cost-effective solution.
