Hydrated Lime or Sorbacal® and Active Carbon or Lignite Coke for Pharmaceutical Waste to Energy Incineration Plant

In the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, treating waste, such as drug blister packs, poses a major challenge. Composed of complex materials such as plastic, aluminum, and protective layers, blister packs are difficult to recycle using traditional mechanical methods. Therefore, they are often incinerated or incinerated. During combustion, however, they generate fumes containing pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals (e.g., lead, cadmium, and mercury), which pose a serious risk to the environment and health. To reduce the impact of these emissions, advanced flue gas purification systems are required. An effective solution is based on the combined use of hydrated lime and activated carbon or lignite coke.

Solution with Hydrated Lime or Sorbacal® plus Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

Hydrated lime and Sorbacal® are used to neutralize acids in flue gases, transforming them into harmless solid salts, while activated carbon and lignite coke, thanks to their remarkable capacity to adsorb heavy metals and volatile organic compounds, effectively reduce toxic emissions, completing the purification process.

The treatment process involves the use of two separate dosers, calibrated to ensure the correct dosage of both hydrated lime or Sorbacal® and activated carbon or lignite coke.

FAQ

During the combustion of pharmaceutical blisters, which contain materials such as PVC, aluminum, and drug residues, acids such as HCl and HF, sulfur oxides (SOx), and heavy metals such as mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) are produced. These elements, highly polluting, require specific treatments to be neutralized and removed before the fumes are released into the atmosphere.
During the combustion of complex wastes, such as pharmaceutical blisters, smoke rich in pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), acids (HCl and HF), and heavy metals (e.g., mercury, lead, and cadmium) is produced. Hydrated lime is used to neutralize the acids present in the gases, whereas activated carbon/lignite coke can adsorb toxic metals and other harmful compounds. The combination of these two agents ensures compliance with environmental regulations regarding emissions.
Hydrated lime, thanks to its excellent chemical reactivity, effectively neutralizes the acidic substances present in the fumes produced by combustion. When it comes into contact with hydrochloric acid (HCl) or hydrofluoric acid (HF), it converts them into solid salts such as calcium chloride (CaCl₂) or calcium fluoride (CaF₂), which are stable and harmless. This significantly reduces the acidity in the exhaust fumes, preventing environmental damage.
Activated carbon and lignite coke act as an adsorptive filter, capturing extremely dangerous particles such as heavy metals (e.g., mercury, lead, cadmium) and certain toxic organic compounds. Their porous structure allows them to have a very large specific surface area, optimizing adsorption.
These two materials are often used in the purification of fumes, but they have different characteristics: activated carbon, with its extremely porous structure, is ideal for absorbing a wide range of contaminants. Lignite coke, on the other hand, is less versatile and is more commonly used at lower temperatures, also being more economical for plants operating under certain conditions.
