Pre-ground SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate and Active Carbon or Lignite Coke for Pharmaceutical Waste to Energy Incineration Plants

In waste incineration plants from the chemical/pharmaceutical industry, the disposal of complex materials, such as expired drug blister packs and other industrial waste, represents a crucial challenge for environmental and health protection. During the combustion process, this waste releases fumes containing harmful substances, including sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium. The heterogeneous nature of the incinerated materials makes the implementation of advanced purification systems essential to ensure emissions comply with environmental regulations. A particularly effective solution is based on the combined use of Solvay SOLVAir® pre-ground sodium bicarbonate and activated carbon or lignite coke.

Solution with Pre Ground SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate plus Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

The use of Solvay SOLVAir® pre-ground sodium bicarbonate and activated carbon or lignite coke in incineration plants enables efficient treatment of industrial flue gases. The pre-ground sodium bicarbonate chemically reacts with the acids present in the flue gases, neutralizing them and converting them into non-hazardous solid salts. At the same time, the activated carbon or lignite coke acts as an adsorbent, capturing heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, and lead, and removing other toxic organic compounds. The combined process involves injecting both materials through separate dosers, designed for precision and uniformity of delivery. This solution effectively reduces pollutants while meeting the stringent limits imposed by current regulations for incineration plants.

Flue Gas Cleaning with Pre-ground Solvay SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate and Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

FAQ

Flue gases produced during the incineration of pharmaceutical and chemical waste contain sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and toxic metals like mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd). These pollutants need to be adequately treated to reduce their impact on the environment and human health.
During the incineration of chemical/pharmaceutical materials, such as expired medication blister packs, flue gases containing pollutants like sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals (mercury, cadmium, and lead) are generated. Premilled sodium bicarbonate neutralizes acids by forming solid, non-harmful salts, while activated carbon/lignite coke adsorbs heavy metals and other toxic compounds. The combination of these two materials ensures high efficiency in reducing harmful emissions, allowing compliance with environmental regulations.
Premilled sodium bicarbonate is used to neutralize acids in flue gases through chemical reactions. When it interacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hydrofluoric acid (HF), it forms stable solid salts, such as sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium fluoride (NaF), which can be easily handled and disposed of. This reaction reduces the environmental impact of acidic flue gases generated during incineration.
Activated carbon and lignite coke are used to adsorb heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium, as well as to remove hazardous organic compounds. Thanks to their porous structure, both materials offer high adsorption capacity and deep purification of combustion flue gases.
Both activated carbon and lignite coke can be used for industrial flue gas treatment, but there are differences. Activated carbon, due to its highly porous structure, ensures optimal adsorption of a wide range of contaminants. Lignite coke, although less effective in adsorption capacity, is more economical and suitable for operations requiring low temperature treatments.
Sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate are both used to neutralize acids in industrial flue gases. However, sodium carbonate, with its higher alkalinity level, neutralizes acids quickly. Sodium bicarbonate, decomposing into CO₂, water, and highly porous sodium carbonate, is ideal for more effective treatment at lower temperatures.
