Technical Sodium Bicarbonate and Activated Carbon/Lignite Coke for Pharmaceutical Waste to Energy Incineration Plants

In the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, one of the most common types of waste is drug blister packs, made of composite materials such as plastic, aluminum, and protective layers. These compounds make blister packs difficult to recycle, and therefore they are primarily treated in incinerators or waste-to-energy plants. However, their disposal generates fumes rich in pollutants, including sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals (such as lead, cadmium, and mercury), which are harmful to the environment and human health. To reduce the impact of emissions, plants employ advanced flue gas purification systems, including the combined use of technical sodium bicarbonate and activated carbon or lignite coke.

Solution with Technical Grade Sodium Bicarbonate plus Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

The proposed solution is based on a two-station filtration system. Technical sodium bicarbonate neutralizes the acids present in the flue gases produced by waste combustion. Activated carbon or lignite coke, used in combination with the bicarbonate, intercepts and eliminates heavy metal particles and other pollutants present in the gases. The systems include a mill for grinding and dispensing the sodium bicarbonate, coupled with a doser for the activated carbon or lignite coke, both calibrated based on the composition of the treated waste.

FAQ

During the combustion of pharmaceutical industry waste, materials containing PVC, aluminum, and other compounds release acids such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hydrofluoric acid (HF), along with sulfur oxides (SOx). Furthermore, residues from inks and protective layers can contain heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg). These elements, which pose considerable risks to both human health and the environment, require specific and targeted purification processes.
The waste produced by the pharmaceutical industry, composed of complex materials such as plastics and aluminum, emits gases containing pollutants like sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals during combustion. To reduce these emissions, facilities must adopt advanced purification techniques. Technical grade sodium bicarbonate is employed to neutralize the acids present in the fumes, while activated carbon/lignite coke is essential for capturing and eliminating toxic particles, such as heavy metals and other pollutants.
Technical grade sodium bicarbonate chemically reacts with acids present in fumes resulting from the combustion of pharmaceutical blister packs, forming solid, non-toxic salts such as sodium chloride or sodium sulfate. These solid salts are then removed, thus reducing the acidity of the exhaust gases. This solution is particularly effective for treating fumes with high concentrations of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hydrofluoric acid (HF), commonly found in the plastic materials of blister packs.
Activated carbon and lignite coke are recognized for their ability to capture highly toxic elements such as mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd), often found in the protective layers or residues of medications contained within blister packs. Due to their high specific surface area and adsorptive capability, they are also able to remove other types of suspended organic substances from gaseous effluents.
Both are used in fume purification, but activated carbon stands out for its porous structure and large surface area, which ensures high adsorptive capacity, making it ideal for eliminating organic gases and vapors. Lignite coke, on the other hand, is particularly effective in specific operating conditions, especially at temperatures below 200°C, offering a more economical solution for certain targeted applications.
