Pre-ground SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate and Active Carbon or Lignite Coke for Scrap Iron Recycling Foundry

In the metallurgical sector, scrap iron foundries are essential for resource reuse, helping to reduce the environmental impact of industrial activities. However, the iron smelting process generates gaseous emissions containing numerous harmful substances. The fumes produced include sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals such as chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb), all pollutants that can pose a serious risk to both the environment and human health. To ensure that foundry emissions comply with environmental standards established by current regulations, advanced purification solutions are required. One particularly effective technology involves the combined use of Solvay SOLVAir® pre-ground sodium bicarbonate and activated carbon or lignite coke..

Solution with Pre Ground SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate plus Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

Solvay SOLVAir® pre-ground sodium bicarbonate plays a key role in flue gas treatment, chemically reacting with the acids present and transforming them into harmless solid salts, while activated carbon and lignite coke, thanks to their adsorption capacity, efficiently capture heavy metals and other harmful substances present in the gases. To maximize system efficiency, the reagents are injected separately through two precisely controlled dosers, ensuring the correct balance of the substances in relation to the chemical parameters of the flue gases. This process allows the foundry to meet environmental standards without compromising operational efficiency.

FAQ

Iron scrap recovery foundries, through combustion and the melting process, emit fumes containing sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and heavy metals such as chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb). All these pollutants must be adequately treated to limit their harmful effects on the environment and human health.
During the melting and recovery of iron scrap, combustion generates fumes containing pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), acids (HCl and HF), and heavy metals (for example, chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb)). Premixed sodium bicarbonate chemically neutralizes the acids, reducing their hazard, while activated carbon/lignite coke effectively adsorbs toxic compounds, including heavy metals. The combination of these two materials enables complete purification, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
Premixed sodium bicarbonate is an alkaline compound that reacts with acids present in fumes generated during melting. When it interacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hydrofluoric acid (HF), it transforms them into harmless solid salts such as sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium fluoride (NaF). This chemical reaction neutralizes acidity, reducing the environmental impact of emissions and improving the sustainability of the production process.
Activated carbon and lignite coke are adsorptive materials primarily used for the removal of heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, and lead, as well as the treatment of harmful organic compounds. Thanks to their porous structure, they provide a large surface area for adsorption, ensuring efficient purification of combustion fumes produced during the melting of iron scrap.
Although both are effective for adsorption, activated carbon and lignite coke have some significant differences. Activated carbon, with its highly porous structure, offers better performance in capturing a wide range of contaminants. Lignite coke, while having a lower adsorption capacity, performs better under low-temperature conditions and is often preferred for economic reasons in specific applications.
Both Sodium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate are used to neutralize acids emitted by industrial fumes, but they operate in different ways. Sodium Carbonate has a higher alkalinity and neutralizes many types of acids effectively. Sodium Bicarbonate, on the other hand, decomposes producing CO2, water, and an activated form of Sodium Carbonate, characterized by a greater porosity which increases its effectiveness at low temperatures, making it particularly suitable for iron foundries.
