Pre-ground SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate and Active Carbon or Lignite Coke for Steel Plants

Within the industrial landscape, the steel industry plays a key role in steel production, with processes that, however, generate polluting emissions. The combustion of fuels required to smelt iron ore releases harmful substances in the flue gases, including sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium. These pollutants pose a serious risk to the environment and human health. Effective flue gas purification systems are therefore crucial. An effective solution to this problem is the use of Solvay SOLVAir® pre-ground sodium bicarbonate combined with activated carbon or lignite coke.

Solution with Pre Ground SOLVAir® Sodium Bicarbonate plus Active Carbon or Lignite Coke

The use of Solvay SOLVAir® pre-ground sodium bicarbonate represents a fundamental strategy for neutralizing acids in flue gases, converting them into harmless salts. At the same time, activated carbon or lignite coke, thanks to its remarkable adsorption capacity, can treat and remove heavy metals and other pollutants. The application method involves the controlled injection of both compounds through two dosing devices, providing the precision necessary to ensure high efficiency in flue gas purification, in compliance with environmental regulations.

FAQ

Fumes arising from steelmaking industrial processes contain pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and heavy metals like mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd), which need to be effectively treated to minimize environmental and health risks.
The steel production process entails the generation of fumes that contain pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and heavy metals (e.g., mercury, lead, cadmium). Pre-milled sodium bicarbonate chemically binds to these acids, effectively neutralizing them, while activated carbon and lignite coke adsorb the heavy metals and other hazardous elements. The combination of these materials ensures a significant reduction of pollutants, in accordance with environmental standards.
Pre-milled sodium bicarbonate chemically interacts with the acids in the fumes, primarily hydrochloric acid (HCl), converting them into stable and harmless salts like sodium chloride (NaCl). This process neutralizes the acidity of the fumes, mitigating the environmental impact of harmful emissions.
These materials are used for their ability to adsorb heavy metals and other dangerous compounds present in industrial fumes. Thanks to their porous structure, they offer extensive adsorption surfaces, making them extremely effective in eliminating such pollutants from combustion fumes.
While both are effective in flue gas purification, activated carbon is distinguished by its greater porosity, which makes it particularly suitable for the adsorption of a wide variety of harmful substances. On the other hand, lignite coke is preferable in certain circumstances, especially for its generally lower cost and adaptability to processes operating at lower temperatures.
