During the production of steel and iron, various pollutants are emitted. Metallurgical processing and the use of fossil fuels generate sulfur oxides (SOx), as well as hydrochloric acid (HCl). Heavy metals such as Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb), and Chromium (Cr) are also commonly present, along with various volatile organic compounds, representing a significant environmental challenge.
The steel industry, in its production process, generates polluting fumes containing acids such as sulfur oxides (SOx), hydrochloric acid (HCl), as well as heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cr), and other hazardous volatile organic compounds. Sodium bicarbonate neutralizes the acids present, converting them into harmless salts, while activated carbon/lignite coke is effective in absorbing heavy metals and organic compounds, significantly reducing the environmental impact of the fumes.
Within the steelmaking context, sodium bicarbonate reacts with the acids contained in the fumes, for example, HCl and SOx, converting them into harmless salts such as sodium chloride and sodium sulfate. This chemical reaction also occurs at high temperatures, typical of industrial processes, contributing to the reduction of the overall acidity of the fumes.
Activated carbon and lignite coke play a critical role in absorbing heavy metals such as Zinc, Lead, and Chromium, as well as volatile organic compounds and other toxic substances present in the metal processing fumes.
The use of lignite coke and activated carbon in the removal of atmospheric pollutants is based on their distinct filtration capabilities. Activated carbon, known for its vast surface area and porous structure, is particularly effective in capturing a variety of gases and organic vapors, making it ideal for a wide range of applications. Lignite coke, on the other hand, proves advantageous in specific contexts where temperatures do not exceed 200°C, specializing in the removal of particular contaminants. Due to its lower cost, lignite coke is preferable in thermally compatible environments.
